The melakarta is the South Indian equivalent to the North Indian that or the Western musical scale. The melakarta provides one of the methods of classifying ragas in South Indian music. The structure of the melakarta is very scientific and can be explained in the Melakarta purport. Unlike Western music, sixteen notes, rather than twelve, are incorporated.
