Sri Guru Carana Padma Kevala Bhakati Sadma

Lyrics: Sri Guru Carana Padma Kevala Bhakati Sadma

Author: Narottama Dasa Thakura

Book Name: Prema Bhakti Candrika

Language: Bengali

Raga: Kafi

The ceremonial worship of the spiritual master, or the Guru Puja, is accompanied by the singing of the Sri Guru Vandana written by Narottama Dasa Thakura. Verse 1 and 2 is sung the same as “sri guru carana padma.” Verses 3 and 4 are sung in the way represented by the first words “caksu dan dilo jei.”

As a Guru puja song, original verses 5 through 10 are eliminated, although they can be sung.

Few musically technical points about this song that should be considered is the second and fourth lines in verses 1 and 2 must be kept long to avoid problems being out of sync with the eight beat cycle.

When Verse 3 begins, it is important to emphasize the true tonic (Sa), and not the incorrectly assumed komal ni (‘n). If you play the song exactly the way it is shown here, you will see the true notes that are masked by incorrect assumptions of the Sa in the song. Many songs, in the history of devotional music, have appeared altered because of incorrect assumptions of the Sa.
