Balarama Jayanti

The start of string of holidays celebrated in Krsna lila starts with Balarama Jayanti. The appearance day of Balarama is celebrated on the first day of the month of Bhadra (Hrsikesa). He is the son of Vasudeva and Rohini and is the older brother of Sri Krsna. The advent of Lord Balarama is explained in the Tenth Canto of the Srimad Bhagavatam. Devotees usually celebrate this day by reading His activities and earthly pastimes on Earth. In addition, they fast until noon, in which they follow a grand kirtan with a feast with honey preparations, as Sri Balarama is fond of honey. Some devotees also prepare a honey-based beverage known as “varuni”, that is very pleasing to Lord Balarama.
