The unusual feature we see here is the concept of the ‘off-beat’ bol. Notice how tā is played half-way after Mātrā 2 beats. In other words, “dhin” is held for 1½ mātrās. How do we count half-beats orally?

You can count it as “sixteen beats.” You would say,” “ONE-and-TWO-and-THREE-and-FOUR-and-FIVE-and-SIX-and-SEVEN-and-EIGHT-and.” There are sixteen words, but we accentuated the main mātrās. The half-beats had the word “and.” So you would play “tā” at the “and” after TWO. Listen to the off-beat of mātrā 2.

This theory might be difficult to fathom, so the only real way to learn this is by hearing, repeating, and practicing. Listen to the next two clips. The first is prakār 5 without kartals. The second is prakār with kartals.
