Compared to prakār 1, the off beat nature is lost with more bols on both vibhāgs. Except for dhin on the sam and “kat” on mātrā 5, this cycle is comprised of single bols that alternate from dāyān to bāyā. This is great for accompanying faster paced performances, as using the theka and prakār 1 might be difficult to play at a fast speed.

ACCOMPANIMENT PRACTICE:

Here are two accompaniment practice exercises. The first clip is the Hare Krishna mahāmantra accompanied with kartals and mridanga playing bhajani tāla prakār 2.

The second accompaniment exercise is an instrumental kirtana playing “Govinda Jaya Jaya” in Raga Asavari used in the Radha Krishna Temple (1970) album produced by the late George Harrison. Accompany this kirtana with bhajani tāla prakār 2. Don’t limit your practice to just prakār 2. Feel free to practice this with the thekā and prakār 1, as well.
