Cautala is a rare tala used in tabla, but a very common tala used in heavy pakhawaj performances, such a dhrupada. Since most performances are in cautala, this tala also came to be known as “dhrupada tala.” Cautala consists of four heavy talis, hence the name “cautala” (four claps), and no khalis. Due to its important role in pakhawaj, the theka of this tala (known to pakhawaj players as the ‘thappi’) will rarely be heard as pakhawaj players will improvise throughout the entire performance.

A special feature to keep note about this tala is the catastra nature of the tala. It flows more with a three sets of four, rather than the four sets of three (tisra) motif.
